Ingredients for Bierrocks With Cheese

  • 1 cup lukewarm milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6-7 cups all-purpose flour
  • Ground Beef
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • American Cheese
  • Egg
  • Sesame seeds, for sprinkling

How to Make Bierrocks With Cheese

  1. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup lukewarm milk and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil.
  2. Add 2 large eggs, 2 teaspoons active dry yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, and 5 cups all-purpose flour.
  3. Mix well, gradually adding more flour (up to 1 more cup) until a soft, kneadable dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Meanwhile, brown 1 lb ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  7. Add 1 medium onion, chopped, and 2 cups shredded cabbage. Cook until the onion is softened and the cabbage is slightly wilted (about 5-7 minutes).
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  10. Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness.
  11. Cut out circles using a 4-inch cookie cutter or a knife.
  12. Place 1/2 slice (about 1 ounce) of your favorite cheese on one half of each circle. Top with 2-3 tablespoons of the beef and cabbage mixture. Place the other 1/2 slice of cheese on top.
  13. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, and crimp the edges to seal.
  14. Place the Bierrocks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water (egg wash) and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  15. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  16. Serve immediately. To freeze, cool completely, then place on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to a freezer bag for long-term storage. To reheat from frozen, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35-40 minutes, or until heated through.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
