Ingredients for Southern Sweet Tea
- 16 cups water (4 cups boiling, 12 cups cold)
- 6 family-size Lipton tea bags (or 12 individual tea bags)
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
How to Make Southern Sweet Tea
- Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a 2-quart saucepan over high heat.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat.
- Add 6 family-size Lipton tea bags (or 12 individual tea bags) to the hot water. Steep for 15 minutes, gently pressing the tea bags against the sides of the saucepan several times to release maximum flavor.
- Remove the tea bags, gently squeezing them over the saucepan to extract all the remaining tea.
- Add 1 ½ cups granulated sugar and ½ teaspoon baking soda to the tea. Stir until the sugar and baking soda are completely dissolved.
- Stir in 12 cups of cold water.
- Serve immediately over ice, or chill for later. Garnish with lemon wedges (optional).
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Elevate your dish with simple flavor boosters! A final flourish of freshly chopped herbs can add incredible brightness, while a squeeze of lemon or lime juice right before serving can awaken all the flavors. Don't underestimate a sprinkle of quality finishing salt or a drizzle of good olive oil to make your creation shine.
