How to Make Baked Cheeseburgers
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Toast 6 slices of bread until golden brown. Lightly butter both sides of each slice.
- Cut each slice of toast into 3 lengthwise pieces.
- In a large skillet, brown 1 lb ground beef (or 1 lb pork sausage) with 1/2 cup chopped onion and 1/2 cup chopped celery until browned. Drain thoroughly.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons mustard, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and black pepper to taste.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/4 cup milk, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
- Butter a 9x9 inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the toasted bread pieces in the prepared baking dish.
- Spoon half of the meat mixture over the bread. Sprinkle with 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat layers with remaining bread, meat, and cheese.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layers.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed and golden brown.
- Let stand for 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares and serving.
