  • 6 slices of bread
  • Butter for toasting bread
  • Lean Ground Beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • Prepared Mustard
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (1/4 tsp + 1/4 tsp)
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • American Cheese

How to Make Baked Cheeseburgers

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Toast 6 slices of bread until golden brown. Lightly butter both sides of each slice.
  3. Cut each slice of toast into 3 lengthwise pieces.
  4. In a large skillet, brown 1 lb ground beef (or 1 lb pork sausage) with 1/2 cup chopped onion and 1/2 cup chopped celery until browned. Drain thoroughly.
  5. Stir in 2 tablespoons mustard, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and black pepper to taste.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, 1/4 cup milk, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  7. Butter a 9x9 inch baking dish.
  8. Layer half of the toasted bread pieces in the prepared baking dish.
  9. Spoon half of the meat mixture over the bread. Sprinkle with 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.
  10. Repeat layers with remaining bread, meat, and cheese.
  11. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layers.
  12. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed and golden brown.
