How to Make Barbecued Burgers
- In a small saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
- Bring the BBQ sauce mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- Remove from heat and set aside 1 cup of the BBQ sauce in a separate bowl.
- In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef with the remaining BBQ sauce. Avoid overmixing to prevent tough burgers.
- Divide the beef mixture into 6 equal portions and shape them into patties about 3/4 inch thick.
- Preheat your grill to medium heat. Once hot, place the patties on the grill.
- Grill the burgers, covered, for 6-8 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness. Use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
- During the last 5 minutes of grilling, baste the burgers generously with 1/2 cup of the reserved BBQ sauce.
- Serve the burgers immediately on toasted buns with your favorite toppings and the remaining BBQ sauce.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
