How to Make Ground Beef And Cabbage Casserole
- Brown 1 lb ground beef (or 1 lb seasoned pork sausage, or 1 lb leftover taco meat) in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Drain off any excess grease.
- Return the beef (or sausage/taco meat) to the skillet. Add 1 medium onion (chopped), 2 cloves garlic (minced), 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional). Cook for 2-3 minutes, until fragrant.
- Stir in 24 oz (2 (12 oz) cans) tomato sauce. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Lightly grease a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Add 4 cups shredded cabbage (about 1 medium head) to the bottom of the casserole dish.
- Pour half of the meat and tomato sauce mixture over the cabbage.
- Layer the remaining cabbage and then the remaining meat sauce on top.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese over the top.
- Cover the casserole dish and bake for 45 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly. If desired, broil for the last 2-3 minutes to brown the cheese.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Elevate your dish with simple flavor boosters! A final flourish of freshly chopped herbs can add incredible brightness, while a squeeze of lemon or lime juice right before serving can awaken all the flavors. Don't underestimate a sprinkle of quality finishing salt or a drizzle of good olive oil to make your creation shine.
