Cómo preparar Rock Candy For Kids

  1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup (240ml) of water and 2 cups (240g) of granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Continue adding sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring until dissolved. Stop when the sugar no longer dissolves easily (the solution will be supersaturated).
  3. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool until lukewarm (approximately 100-110°F or 38-43°C). Do not let it cool completely.
  4. Pour the sugar syrup into a clean glass jar.
  5. Tie one end of the heavy cord securely around the middle of a pencil.
  6. Carefully place the pencil across the top of the jar, ensuring the cord hangs down into the sugar syrup without touching the bottom or sides of the jar.
  7. In a few hours or overnight, crystals will begin to form on the cord.
  8. Once a small layer of crystals have formed (at least a few hours), carefully remove the cord from the jar.
  9. Gently pour the remaining syrup back into the saucepan. Reheat, stirring until the crystals are dissolved, then cool again to lukewarm.
  10. Pour the syrup back into the jar. Reinsert the cord with the existing crystals, making sure it doesn't touch the sides or bottom.
  11. Repeat steps 8-10 daily for several days, or until your rock candy crystals reach your desired size. The crystals will grow larger with each repetition!
  12. Once the candy reaches the desired size, remove the candy from the jar, snip off any excess string, and enjoy your homemade rock candy!
