How to Make Rock Candy For Kids
- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup (240ml) of water and 2 cups (240g) of granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Continue adding sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring until dissolved. Stop when the sugar no longer dissolves easily (the solution will be supersaturated).
- Remove from heat and let the syrup cool until lukewarm (approximately 100-110°F or 38-43°C). Do not let it cool completely.
- Pour the sugar syrup into a clean glass jar.
- Tie one end of the heavy cord securely around the middle of a pencil.
- Carefully place the pencil across the top of the jar, ensuring the cord hangs down into the sugar syrup without touching the bottom or sides of the jar.
- In a few hours or overnight, crystals will begin to form on the cord.
- Once a small layer of crystals have formed (at least a few hours), carefully remove the cord from the jar.
- Gently pour the remaining syrup back into the saucepan. Reheat, stirring until the crystals are dissolved, then cool again to lukewarm.
- Pour the syrup back into the jar. Reinsert the cord with the existing crystals, making sure it doesn't touch the sides or bottom.
- Repeat steps 8-10 daily for several days, or until your rock candy crystals reach your desired size. The crystals will grow larger with each repetition!
- Once the candy reaches the desired size, remove the candy from the jar, snip off any excess string, and enjoy your homemade rock candy!
