Ingredients for Baked Skillet Penne

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Whole Wheat Penne
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Fresh Basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

How to Make Baked Skillet Penne

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In an oven-safe skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. Add 4 cloves minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes. Cook for 5 minutes, or until garlic is lightly browned.
  3. Pour in one (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1/2 cup water, 1 (16 ounce) package penne pasta, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir to combine.
  4. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 15-18 minutes, stirring occasionally, adding a little more water if the pasta becomes too dry.
  5. Once the penne is almost cooked through (al dente), stir in 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
  6. Sprinkle generously with 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown.
  8. Serve immediately, garnished with extra basil (optional). Enjoy with a side salad and garlic bread!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
