How to Make Sloe Gin
- Wash and thoroughly dry 1 pound (450g) of sloes.
- Freeze the sloes for 1 week, or pierce each sloe's skin multiple times with a needle or sharp skewer to help them release their juices.
- Place the sloes in a large, sterilized glass jar (at least 2-liter capacity).
- Add 1 pound (450g) granulated sugar.
- Pour in 1.75 liters (750ml x 2.33) of good quality gin.
- (Optional) Add 10 whole cloves and 1 teaspoon of almond essence.
- Securely seal the jar with an airtight lid.
- Store the jar in a cool, dark place for at least 2 months, ideally longer.
- Gently shake the jar every 2-3 days for the first week, then once a week thereafter.
- After at least two months (longer is better!), carefully strain the sloe gin through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth-lined funnel into smaller, sterilized bottles.
- Allow the strained gin to settle for a day or two before enjoying. The longer you wait, the smoother it will taste!
- Enjoy responsibly - this is a potent and delicious liqueur!
