How to Make Orangecello

  1. Using a vegetable peeler, remove the zest from 8 small/medium oranges in long strips. Avoid the bitter white pith as much as possible.
  2. Place the orange zest in a clean, airtight container (glass is best).
  3. Add 750ml (25 oz) of high-quality vodka to the container with the zest.
  4. Seal the container tightly. Let the mixture steep in direct sunlight for 1 week, or in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. Gently shake the container every few days.
  5. In a small saucepan, combine 375g (13 oz) granulated sugar and 375ml (12.7 oz) of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  6. Remove from heat and allow the simple syrup to cool completely.
  7. Once the orange zest has steeped, strain the vodka mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, pressing gently to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the zest.
  8. Slowly pour the cooled simple syrup into the strained vodka mixture, stirring gently to combine.
  9. Transfer the Orangecello to sterilized bottles. Seal tightly and store in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks to allow the flavors to meld. It will improve with age and can be stored for months in the refrigerator or freezer.
