How to Make Dana's Homemade Kahlua

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups water, 1 cup strong brewed coffee (or 8 tbsp instant coffee), and 2 cups granulated sugar.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  3. Reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for 3 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The mixture will reduce and thicken slightly.
  4. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely to room temperature.
  5. Once cooled, stir in 1 cup vanilla extract and 1 750ml bottle of vodka.
  6. Carefully strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth lined funnel into a clean bottle or jar.
  7. Seal tightly with an airtight lid. Allow the Kahlúa to rest in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks to allow the flavors to meld. The longer it rests, the smoother it will become.
