How to Make Perky Penguins

  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of shortening.
  2. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  3. Let the chocolate cool slightly.
  4. Place a small amount of chocolate mixture on top of 6 marshmallows, then top with the remaining 6 marshmallows to create a double-layered base.
  5. Allow the marshmallows to sit for 60 minutes, or until set.
  6. Gently reheat the chocolate mixture if needed.
  7. Dip three-fourths of each marshmallow into the chocolate, leaving a 3/4-inch vertical white strip undipped down the front to create the penguin's body. Place on wax paper to set.
  8. Let stand for 60 minutes, or until set.
  9. Cut the Tootsie Roll into 6 equal pieces.
  10. Place the Tootsie Roll pieces on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 10-15 seconds, or until softened.
  11. Carefully roll each piece into a small ball to create the penguin's head.
  12. Use a toothpick to attach two miniature chocolate chips to each ball for the eyes.
  13. Cut off and discard the yellow end of six candy corn pieces.
  14. Slightly flatten the orange and white parts of the remaining candy corn and gently press one onto each chocolate ball for the beak.
  15. Reheat the chocolate mixture if necessary.
  16. Attach the heads to the marshmallow bodies using a small amount of melted chocolate.
  17. Let stand for 45 minutes, or until set.
  18. Separate the cream-filled cookies and completely remove and discard the white cream filling.
  19. Cut six cookie halves to use as wings.
  20. Attach the wings to the penguins with the cut side facing forward, using melted chocolate.
  21. Attach the penguin bodies to the remaining cookie halves (bases) using melted chocolate.
  22. Remove the white ends of the remaining candy corn pieces and discard.
  23. Slightly flatten the yellow and orange parts of the candy corn.
  24. Attach two candy corn pieces to each cookie base as feet, using melted chocolate.
  25. Let stand for 45 minutes, or until set. Your Perky Penguins are ready!
