  2. Butter 8 slices of bread and arrange 4 slices, buttered-side down, in the prepared dish.

  4. Layer another 4 slices of bread, buttered-side down, on top. Sprinkle with remaining nutmeg and sultanas.
  5. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread, buttered-side down.
  6. In a large bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, 1 cup heavy cream, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until well combined.
  7. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread through a fine-mesh sieve.
  8. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar over the top. Cover loosely with foil and let stand at room temperature for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight in the refrigerator.
