How to Make Chocolate Caramel Bars

  1. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt 14 ounces of caramels with 1/3 cup (80ml) of milk, stirring frequently until smooth.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) of softened butter and 1 cup (200g) of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add 1 (15.25 ounce) box of chocolate cake mix and the remaining 1/3 cup (80ml) of milk. Mix until just combined.
  4. Pour half of the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 6 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven and sprinkle 1 cup (170g) of semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the batter.
  7. Gently spread the melted caramel mixture evenly over the chocolate chips.
  8. Spread the remaining batter evenly over the caramel layer.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  10. Let cool completely before cutting into bars. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for easier cutting and to allow the bars to set.
