How to Make Plain Ole Turkey

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Remove neck and giblets from inside the turkey and discard or save for another use. Rinse the turkey cavity with cold water.
  3. Pat the turkey inside and out completely dry with paper towels. This helps achieve crispy skin.
  4. Place the turkey in an oval roasting pan.
  5. Pour 2 cups of water into the bottom of the roasting pan. Do not pour water over the turkey.
  6. Place the roasting pan in the preheated oven. Do not cover.
  7. Roast the turkey for 15 minutes at 450°F (232°C).
  8. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (191°C).
  9. Continue roasting for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 180°F (82°C).
  10. Let the turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful bird.
