How to Make Plain Ole Turkey
- Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
- Remove neck and giblets from inside the turkey and discard or save for another use. Rinse the turkey cavity with cold water.
- Pat the turkey inside and out completely dry with paper towels. This helps achieve crispy skin.
- Place the turkey in an oval roasting pan.
- Pour 2 cups of water into the bottom of the roasting pan. Do not pour water over the turkey.
- Place the roasting pan in the preheated oven. Do not cover.
- Roast the turkey for 15 minutes at 450°F (232°C).
- Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (191°C).
- Continue roasting for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh registers 180°F (82°C).
- Let the turkey rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful bird.
