How to Make Tortoise Bars

  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine 14 ounces of caramels and 2 fluid ounces (1/4 cup) of milk.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the caramels are completely melted and smooth.
  3. Set the caramel mixture aside to cool slightly.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup (1 stick) of melted butter, 15.25 ounces (1 box) of dry yellow cake mix, 1 cup of chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts recommended), and the remaining 2 fluid ounces (1/4 cup) of milk. Mix until well combined.
  5. Press half of the cake mixture into a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to create an even layer.
  6. Bake at 325°F (160°C) for 6 minutes.
  7. Immediately remove from the oven and evenly sprinkle 1 cup of chocolate chips over the warm crust.
  8. Spread the cooled caramel mixture evenly over the chocolate chips.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining cake mixture evenly over the caramel layer.
  10. Return the pan to the oven and bake at 325°F (160°C) for 15-18 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden brown and the center is set.
  11. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. For best results, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
