How to Make Chocolate Dipped Heart Cookies

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the softened cream cheese, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour, beating until just mixed. Do not overmix.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until firm.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/8 inch thickness.
  7. Use a 2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookies. Lightly flour the cutter to prevent sticking.
  8. Place the cutouts about 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 7-10 minutes, or until the edges are very lightly browned.
  10. Immediately transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
  11. In a small saucepan over low heat, or in a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips and shortening together until smooth. Stir occasionally.
  12. Once the cookies are completely cool, dip about half of each heart into the melted chocolate.
  13. Place the dipped cookies on cookie sheets or trays lined with waxed paper to allow the chocolate to set.
  14. Refrigerate until the chocolate is firm.
  15. Store the cookies, covered, in the refrigerator with wax paper between layers. Makes approximately 3 1/2 dozen.
