How to Make Cranberry Liqueur

  1. Combine 2 cups fresh cranberries with 2 cups granulated sugar in a large saucepan.
  2. Add 1 cup water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, and boil for 4-5 minutes, or until cranberry skins begin to burst.
  3. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
  4. Transfer the cranberry mixture to a large, clean jar. Add 1.75 liters (7 cups) of high-quality vodka. Seal the jar tightly and shake vigorously.
  5. Infuse the liqueur for at least 7 days in a cool, dark place, shaking or stirring gently once a day.
  6. Line a fine-mesh sieve with cheesecloth and place it over a large bowl. Pour the cranberry-vodka mixture through the sieve, pressing gently on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard the solids.
  7. Let the strained liqueur rest for 3-4 days undisturbed.
  8. Carefully decant the clear liqueur from the top of the jar into a clean jar, leaving the cloudy sediment behind.
  9. If desired, strain the sediment through a coffee filter or fine paper filter to recover additional clear liqueur and add it to the decanted liqueur.
  10. Add 2 additional cups of granulated sugar to the decanted liqueur and shake vigorously until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  11. Allow the liqueur to clear overnight, undisturbed.
  12. Bottle the cranberry liqueur and store in a cool, dark place. Enjoy!
