How to Make Salisbury Steak

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. In a large bowl, gently combine 1.5 lbs ground beef, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 cup finely chopped onion, and 1/2 cup crushed saltine crackers.
  3. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1 inch thick.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  5. Transfer the patties to a baking dish.
  6. Pour 1 1/2 cups of your favorite gravy over the patties (either homemade from pan drippings or using a can/packet).
  7. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is bubbly.
  8. Serve immediately over mashed potatoes (highly recommended!).
