How to Make Strata
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Choose your desired filling option (see ingredient list for options).
- In a large bowl, whisk together 6 large eggs, 2 cups milk, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, and 1 teaspoon salt.
- Cut 1 loaf (about 1 pound) of crusty bread into 1-inch cubes. Arrange bread cubes in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle chosen cheese (2 cups) evenly over the bread cubes.
- Evenly distribute your chosen filling ingredients over the cheese. (See ingredient amounts in the 'Ingredients' section for each option).
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes and filling, gently pressing down to submerge the bread.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
- Uncover and bake for 60-75 minutes, or until the strata is puffed, golden brown, and the custard is set (no longer jiggly). Tent with foil if the top browns too quickly.
- Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve warm in spoonfuls.
