Ingredients for Apple Pig Pal
- Red Delicious Apple
- Gumdrops
- Toothpicks
- Whole Cloves
- A small piece of fruit leather (enough for two 1-inch by 0.75-inch triangles)
- Licorice
How to Make Apple Pig Pal
- Gently wash and dry one medium-sized apple.
- Insert one end of a toothpick into a small gumdrop (approximately 1/2 inch diameter).
- Carefully stick the other end of the toothpick into the bottom of the apple core to create the pig's snout.
- Place two whole cloves into the gumdrop to form the nostrils.
- Position two more whole cloves above the snout to create the eyes.
- Twist off the apple stem. Poke a small hole with a toothpick where the stem was and insert a 1-inch piece of shoestring licorice to make the tail.
- Cut a 1-inch by 1.5-inch rectangle from a fruit leather sheet. Cut the rectangle diagonally to create two equal-sized triangles.
- Use small pieces of toothpicks or a small amount of red icing gel to attach the triangles to the top of the apple as ears. Gently bend the top of each triangle to hide any visible toothpick.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
