How to Make Frejoles Colados
- Rinse 1 cup of black beans and soak them in 4 cups of water overnight.
- Drain the soaked beans and place them in a pot. Add 6 cups of fresh water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 60-90 minutes, or until the beans are very soft and easily mashed.
- Once cooked, carefully force the beans through a fine-mesh strainer or food mill, pressing to extract as much puree as possible. Discard the skins.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the bean puree (approximately 2 cups), 2 cups of whole milk, ½ cup of granulated sugar, 2 cinnamon sticks, and 4 whole cloves.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens significantly and the bottom of the pan is visible for a few seconds between stirs (about 20-25 minutes).
- Remove from heat and carefully remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds.
- Pour the Frejoles Colados into individual serving bowls or a larger bowl. Sprinkle with an additional tablespoon of sesame seeds for garnish.
- Serve warm or chilled. Enjoy!
