Ingredients for Barbecue Tofu

  • Firm Tofu
  • No Added Salt Tomato Paste
  • Blackstrap Molasses
  • Water
  • Tamari
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Olive Oil
  • Dry Mustard
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Cayenne
  • Pinch of black pepper

How to Make Barbecue Tofu

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or prepare your grill for medium heat.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce ingredients: 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free), 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1 tablespoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke, and a pinch of black pepper.
  3. Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut into 1-inch cubes.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the barbecue sauce and toss to coat thoroughly. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes (longer is better!).
  5. For oven baking: Arrange the marinated tofu in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30-35 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and slightly crispy.
  6. For grilling: Thread the tofu cubes onto skewers or grill directly on a lightly oiled grill grate. Grill for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until nicely charred and heated through.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy! Garnish with fresh cilantro or green onions, if desired.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
