How to Make Barbecue Tofu
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) or prepare your grill for medium heat.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce ingredients: 1/2 cup ketchup, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free), 2 tablespoons maple syrup, 1 tablespoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke, and a pinch of black pepper.
- Press the tofu to remove excess water. Cut into 1-inch cubes.
- Add the tofu cubes to the barbecue sauce and toss to coat thoroughly. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes (longer is better!).
- For oven baking: Arrange the marinated tofu in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30-35 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- For grilling: Thread the tofu cubes onto skewers or grill directly on a lightly oiled grill grate. Grill for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until nicely charred and heated through.
- Serve hot and enjoy! Garnish with fresh cilantro or green onions, if desired.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Small additions can make a big impact! Try a sprinkle of fresh herbs, a dash of your favorite spice blend, or a squeeze of citrus just before serving to really enhance the flavors of your dish.
