How to Make Halloween Worms

  1. In a medium bowl, sprinkle the gelatin powder evenly over 1 cup of boiling water.
  2. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to allow the gelatin to absorb the water.
  3. Stir gently until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Do not use hot water immediately after step 1. The mixture will turn solid if you use too hot of water.
  4. Refrigerate until the gelatin mixture becomes lukewarm (about 20 minutes).
  5. While the gelatin cools, prepare your straws: Gently pull on each straw to slightly extend its length to make longer worms.
  6. Arrange the straws upright in your tall, cleaned container. Make sure the straws are tightly packed to prevent any gaps.
  7. In a separate bowl, whip 1 cup of heavy cream until soft peaks form. Do not overwhip.
  8. Add a few drops of green food coloring (or your desired color) to the whipped cream and mix well.
  9. Gently fold the whipped cream into the lukewarm gelatin mixture until just combined.
  10. Carefully pour the gelatin mixture into the container, ensuring that all the straws are filled to the top.
  11. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight (up to 2 days), until the gelatin is completely set.
  12. Once firm, gently pull the straws out of the container.
  13. Carefully pull the straws apart to separate the worm shapes.
  14. Run hot tap water for about 2-3 seconds over 3 to 4 straws at a time to loosen the gelatin from the straws.
  15. Starting at the empty end, gently push the worms out of the straws using a rolling pin or your fingers.
  16. Place the worms onto a baking sheet lined with waxed paper.
  17. Cover and chill for at least 1 hour, or up to 2 days, before serving. The worms will hold at room temperature for up to 2 hours.
