How to Make Toffee Caramel Squares

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine one box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix, 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted margarine, 1/3 cup milk, and 1 cup chopped nuts (your choice - pecans, walnuts, etc.). Mix well.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) margarine, 1/3 cup milk, and 14 ounces caramels (about 1 3/4 cups unwrapped). Stir frequently until smooth and melted.
  4. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with cooking spray.
  5. Spread half of the cake mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 8 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven. Sprinkle evenly with 6 ounces of toffee chips (about 1 1/2 cups).
  8. Pour the melted caramel mixture evenly over the toffee chips.
  9. Spread the remaining cake mixture over the caramel layer.
  10. Bake for an additional 18 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  11. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. This allows the squares to set and makes cutting easier.
