How to Make Toffee Caramel Squares
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine one box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix, 1/2 cup (1 stick) melted margarine, 1/3 cup milk, and 1 cup chopped nuts (your choice - pecans, walnuts, etc.). Mix well.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) margarine, 1/3 cup milk, and 14 ounces caramels (about 1 3/4 cups unwrapped). Stir frequently until smooth and melted.
- Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with cooking spray.
- Spread half of the cake mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 8 minutes.
- Remove from oven. Sprinkle evenly with 6 ounces of toffee chips (about 1 1/2 cups).
- Pour the melted caramel mixture evenly over the toffee chips.
- Spread the remaining cake mixture over the caramel layer.
- Bake for an additional 18 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
- Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares. This allows the squares to set and makes cutting easier.
