- Boil several quarts of water (approximately 6 cups) in a large pot. No need for precise measurement.
- Add 1 cup of rice to the boiling water. Cook until halfway done, stirring occasionally (approximately 10-15 minutes depending on rice type).
- Drain the partially cooked rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse with cool water until completely cooled.
- In a medium-sized pot with a tight-fitting lid, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- Add the cooled rice to the melted butter. Using the handle of a wooden spoon, create 6-8 holes in the rice, going all the way to the bottom of the pot.
- Cover the pot and cook undisturbed for 15 minutes.
- Check for browning at the bottom edge of the pan. If the rice is not ready and the bottom isn't browned, cook for another 5-10 minutes over medium-low heat. If the bottom is browned but the rice is still undercooked, continue cooking over low heat until fully cooked.
- If the rice is cooked but the bottom isn’t browned, increase the heat to medium-high and cook until a crispy, golden-brown layer forms.
- Once the rice is cooked and the bottom is nicely browned, gently stir the crunchy bottom into the rice before serving.
