How to Make America S Test Kitchen Cheesy Garlic Bread
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Position oven rack to the second position from the bottom.
- In a small saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over low heat. Add 4 cloves garlic, finely grated (using a microplane or small grater), and 1 tablespoon of water. Sauté gently for 7-10 minutes, or until a smooth paste forms.
- In a medium bowl, combine the garlic paste with 7 tablespoons (1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon) of softened butter, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well.
- Slice a loaf of your favorite bread (approximately 1 pound) lengthwise into two halves. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on both cut sides of the bread.
- Place the two halves back together, forming a whole loaf. Wrap the loaf tightly in aluminum foil.
- Place the foil-wrapped loaf on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, carefully unwrap the foil, and separate the bread halves. Place them cut-side up on the baking sheet.
- Bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the bread begins to lightly brown.
- Turn on the broiler to high.
- Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese (or your favorite cheese) evenly over the top of both bread halves.
- Place the baking sheet under the broiler for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown, and the bread is crispy.
- Carefully remove from the oven and let cool slightly on a cutting board, cheesy side down.
- Cut into slices and serve immediately. Enjoy!
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
