Ingredients for Apple Butterflies

  • 8 tablespoons peanut butter (plus 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon)
  • Baby Carrots
  • Red Apple
  • 2 small celery stalks
  • Decorator sugar (to taste)

How to Make Apple Butterflies

  1. Spread 2 tablespoons of peanut butter onto the center of each of 4 individual plates.
  2. Shape each mound of peanut butter into an oblong shape approximately 2 inches long and 1 inch wide.
  3. Place 1 small carrot (about 4 inches long) down the center of each peanut butter mound.
  4. Cut 1 medium apple into quarters.
  5. Remove the core from each apple quarter.
  6. Cut each apple quarter into 7 thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick).
  7. Cut 1 apple slice in half crosswise.
  8. Fan 3 apple slices on each side near the top of the carrot to form the upper wings.
  9. Place 1 half-slice on each side near the bottom of the carrot to form the lower wings.
  10. Place 2 small strips of celery (about 1 inch long) at the top of each carrot to form antennae.
  11. Sprinkle the apple slices with decorator sugar.
  12. Decorate the wings with your choice of raisins, craisins, peas, fruit loops, or Cheerios.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
