Ingredients for Awesome Brownies

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur

How to Make Awesome Brownies

  1. Melt 1/2 cup shortening and 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder together in the microwave (in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth) or over a double boiler.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat 2 large eggs until light and frothy.
  4. Gradually add 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar to the beaten eggs, beating until well combined.
  5. Add the melted cocoa mixture to the egg and sugar mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur.
  7. Gradually add the dry ingredients (flour mixture) to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  8. Pour the batter into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan.
  9. The batter will be thick.
  10. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  11. Do not overbake!
  12. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares.
  13. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
