Ingredients for Bananas Flambe
- 2 ripe bananas, but not overly soft, halved lengthwise
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2-3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
- Dark Rum
How to Make Bananas Flambe
- Halve 2 ripe bananas lengthwise, then cut each half lengthwise again into quarters.
- Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a medium-sized skillet over medium heat.
- Add 2-3 tablespoons of packed light brown sugar and stir until melted and slightly caramelized.
- Add the banana quarters to the skillet.
- Cook for 1-2 minutes, until the bananas are warmed through and slightly softened. Gently stir to coat in the sugar mixture.
- Flip the bananas and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Carefully add 1-2 tablespoons of dark rum (or to your desired taste) to the skillet. Tilt the pan and ignite the rum with a long match or kitchen torch (optional, but adds flair!). Let the flames subside.
- Allow the sauce to thicken slightly, about 15-30 seconds. Remove from heat immediately and serve immediately. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor
Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
