Ingredients for Bananas Foster

  • 4 ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise into quarters
  • Unsalted Butter
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup banana liqueur (optional)
  • Golden Rum
  • Vanilla Ice Cream

How to Make Bananas Foster

  1. Peel the bananas and slice each lengthwise into quarters.
  2. In a large skillet (oven-safe preferred), melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the sugar and cinnamon. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to caramelize (about 2-3 minutes).
  4. If using, stir in the banana liqueur and cook for another minute, until bubbly.
  5. Add the bananas to the skillet. Cook, turning occasionally, for 2-3 minutes, until the bananas are softened and slightly browned.
  6. In a small saucepan, gently heat the rum over low heat. **Caution: Do not heat the rum over high heat.**
  7. Carefully and slowly pour the warm rum into the skillet with the bananas. Using a long fireplace match or kitchen torch, carefully ignite the rum. (**Adult supervision required**)
  8. Allow the flames to die down naturally, swirling the pan gently to encourage even cooking and to extend the flaming. The alcohol will burn off quickly.
  9. Remove from heat immediately once the flames subside.
  10. Serve the Bananas Foster immediately over scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
