How to Make Birdseed Bar

  1. In a large frying pan, toast 1 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, and 1/4 cup sesame seeds, one at a time, over medium heat until lightly browned and fragrant. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
  2. Transfer the toasted seeds and oats to a large bowl and stir in 1 cup of sultanas.
  3. In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup honey, and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches the soft ball stage (235-240°F on a candy thermometer).
  4. Pour the hot honey-butter mixture over the seed and sultana mixture in the bowl. Stir well to combine.
  5. Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan to a thickness of approximately 2cm.
  6. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
  7. Once chilled, cut into bars and store in an airtight container.
  8. Enjoy! A recipe shared by Doreen Randal from Wanganui, New Zealand.
