How to Make Birdseed Bar
- In a large frying pan, toast 1 cup of rolled oats, 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds, and 1/4 cup sesame seeds, one at a time, over medium heat until lightly browned and fragrant. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
- Transfer the toasted seeds and oats to a large bowl and stir in 1 cup of sultanas.
- In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup honey, and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches the soft ball stage (235-240°F on a candy thermometer).
- Pour the hot honey-butter mixture over the seed and sultana mixture in the bowl. Stir well to combine.
- Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan to a thickness of approximately 2cm.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until firm.
- Once chilled, cut into bars and store in an airtight container.
- Enjoy! A recipe shared by Doreen Randal from Wanganui, New Zealand.
