How to Make Chewy English Flapjack

  1. Combine 175g butter, 175g caster sugar, and 175ml golden syrup in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  2. Pour the melted mixture into a large mixing bowl. Add 300g porridge oats and your choice of optional ingredients (see below). Mix well to combine.
  3. Line a 20cm square baking tin with baking paper. Pour the flapjack mixture into the prepared tin and spread evenly using the back of a spoon.
  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (160°C fan/Gas Mark 4) for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and set. A skewer inserted into the center should come out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  5. Let the flapjack cool slightly in the tin before cutting into squares. Cutting while still warm prevents it from becoming too hard.
  6. Enjoy warm, or allow to cool completely for a firmer texture. For an extra chocolatey treat, melt 100g of dark chocolate and drizzle over the cooled flapjack.
