How to Make Italian Sausage Sandwiches
- Pierce 1-1.5 lbs Italian sausages (or Polish Kielbasa) several times with a fork.
- Heat 1-2 tsp extra virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausages and 1 cup white wine or water. Partially cover the skillet.
- Bring to a simmer, then turn sausages and continue simmering for 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Once the liquid has evaporated, uncover the skillet and cook until the sausages are browned to your liking (about 5-7 minutes).
- Remove sausages from skillet and set aside on paper towels to drain.
- Drain excess grease from the skillet. Add 1-2 tsp extra virgin olive oil to the skillet and heat over medium heat.
- Add 1 medium onion, chopped, and 2 cloves garlic, minced, to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened (about 5 minutes). Add ¼ cup white wine or water if needed to deglaze the pan.
- Add 1 bell pepper (any color), chopped, to the skillet and cook until crisp-tender (about 5-7 minutes). Stir to combine with onions and scrape up browned bits from the sausage.
- Return sausages to the skillet and heat through.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Warm crusty French rolls or Bolillos in the oven for 5 minutes.
- Split rolls and spread with marinara sauce. Slice sausages lengthwise and place on rolls. Top with sautéed peppers and onions.
- Add a slice of provolone cheese (optional) to the sandwich.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
