How to Make Maple Squares
- Grease a 13x9 inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup mini marshmallows and 1/2 cup margarine. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes, or until marshmallows are melted and smooth.
- Remove from heat and stir in 4 cups Rice Krispies cereal until evenly coated.
- Press the cereal mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan using a spatula coated with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a separate medium, heavy-duty saucepan, combine 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup evaporated milk, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 cup margarine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Continue to cook and stir constantly for 4 1/2 to 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels, 1 cup mini marshmallows, and 1 teaspoon maple flavoring.
- Stir vigorously for 1 minute, or until marshmallows and morsels are completely melted and smooth.
- Pour the melted mixture evenly over the prepared cereal crust.
- Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts over the top.
- Gently press the nuts into the topping.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until completely firm.
- Cut into squares and serve.
