How to Make Turkish Coffee
- Add 1/2 cup (120ml) of water and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Remove from heat and carefully stir in 1-2 teaspoons of finely ground Turkish coffee. Ensure there are no lumps.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and bring the mixture slowly back to a simmer, stirring gently to avoid scorching.
- As the coffee begins to foam and rise, immediately remove it from the heat. This is the first 'rise'.
- Once the foam subsides slightly, return the saucepan to low heat and bring it back to a simmer again. This is the second 'rise'. Repeat this step once more for the third rise.
- Repeat step 5 and 6 for a total of three rises, allowing the coffee to foam and settle each time. The goal is to extract maximum flavor without boiling excessively.
- Once the third rise is complete, remove the saucepan from the heat. A thick sediment should have settled at the bottom and a layer of brown froth should be on top.
- Carefully pour the coffee into small, warmed cups, leaving the sediment at the bottom of the pot. Try to distribute the sediment evenly between cups.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your perfectly brewed Turkish coffee!
