How to Make Turtle Cake Bars
- In a heavy pot, melt 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk, and 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth and melted.
- Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, combine 1 box (15.25 ounces) yellow cake mix, the melted butter mixture from step 2, and 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk. Stir well by hand until just combined. The batter will be sticky.
- Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. Press half of the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden.
- Remove from oven and evenly pour the reserved caramel mixture over the baked cake layer.
- Sprinkle 1 cup chopped pecans and 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the caramel layer.
- Gently press the pecans and chocolate chips into the caramel.
- Drop spoonfuls of the remaining cake batter over the caramel and pecan/chocolate layer. Spread carefully with a spatula. The batter will not completely cover.
- Bake for an additional 20-22 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
- Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars. Enjoy!
