How to Make Apple Cherry Fruit Spread

  1. Peel, core, and chop 4 medium apples (about 4 cups chopped). Pit 2 cups fresh cherries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped apples, cherries, ½ cup apple juice (or other fruit juice), 1 cinnamon stick, and a pinch of ground cinnamon.
  3. Cover the saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.
  4. Uncover the saucepan and reduce the heat to low. Continue to cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the apples are very soft but still hold their shape. Stir occasionally.
  5. Remove the cinnamon stick from the saucepan.
  6. Add the zest of 1 lemon to the apple mixture.
