Ingredients for Apple Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 2 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and diced
  • Shallots
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
  • 15% Cream
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Salt And Pepper

How to Make Apple Mashed Potatoes

  1. Peel and cube 2 lbs of Yukon Gold potatoes. Place in a large saucepan and cover with salted boiling water. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. While the potatoes cook, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add 1 minced shallot and cook until softened, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add 2 diced apples to the saucepan with the shallot. Cook until apples are very tender, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly.
  5. Add the cooked apples and shallot mixture to the drained potatoes.
  6. Roughly mash the potato and apple mixture with a potato masher. Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
  7. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and use an electric mixer to create a smooth puree. Add the heavy cream and nutmeg, mixing until well combined.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve immediately as a delicious side dish.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
