Ingredients for Apple Pie Filling Canned Or You Can Freeze It

  • 8-10 medium apples (about 6 cups sliced)
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Yellow Food Coloring

How to Make Apple Pie Filling Canned Or You Can Freeze It

  1. Sterilize six quart jars by washing them with soap and water, then placing them in a 215°F oven for at least 15 minutes. Leave them in the oven until ready to use.
  2. Peel, core, and slice 8-10 medium apples (about 6 cups sliced apples).
  3. In a large pot, combine 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ cup cornstarch, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  4. Add 1 cup water to the pot and cook over high heat, stirring frequently at first, then constantly until it boils.
  5. Bring to a rolling boil and cook for about 1 minute, or until the mixture thickens significantly.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons lemon juice and a few drops of food coloring (optional).
  7. Carefully pack the hot apple slices into the hot sterilized jars, leaving ½ inch headspace. Pour the hot sauce over the apples, leaving ½ inch headspace.
  8. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to gently push down the apples to eliminate air pockets. Do not overfill! (Leave that ½ inch headspace!)
  9. Wipe the jar rims clean. Place lids and rings on jars, tightening fingertip tight.
  10. Process jars in a boiling water bath for 20 minutes. OR: Freeze the filling in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
  11. To bake an apple pie using this canned filling: Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 325°F and bake for another 40 minutes.

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
