How to Make Baked Steak
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Gently pound a 1.5-inch thick steak (about 1.5 lbs) to an even thickness of about 1 inch using a meat mallet.
- Dredge both sides of the steak in 1/4 cup all-purpose flour seasoned with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
- Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a heavy oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and brown on both sides for 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the steak from the skillet.
- Add 1 cup beef stock to the skillet and bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
- Remove from heat. Layer half of 1 large onion, thinly sliced, in the skillet. Place the steak on top. Layer the remaining onion slices over the steak. Pour the beef stock mixture over the steak and onions. Spoon some of the broth over the top of the steak.
- Bake for 2 hours, covered, basting the steak with pan juices after 1 hour.
- Remove the steak from the oven and let it rest on a cutting board for 10 minutes before slicing.
- Slice the steak against the grain and serve with the delicious onion gravy over creamy mashed potatoes.
