Ingredients for Beans And Beer

  • Dried Pinto Beans
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • Garlic Cloves
  • 12 ounces beer (any light beer works well)
  • Roma Tomatoes
  • Jalapeno Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (omit if using canned beans)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (omit if using canned beans)
  • Fresh Ground Pepper
  • Cilantro Leaf

How to Make Beans And Beer

  1. If using dried beans, rinse them thoroughly. Place in a pot, cover with at least 3 inches of water, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 1 hour, or until tender. Drain and rinse.
  2. While beans are cooking (or if using canned beans), combine the chopped onion and minced garlic in a large, heavy pot. Cook over low heat, covered, for 5-7 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Add a little water if needed to prevent sticking.
  3. Add the cooked or canned beans, beer, diced tomatoes, jalapeño, sugar (if using), salt (if using), and black pepper to the pot.
  4. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. This allows the flavors to meld.
  6. Stir in the fresh cilantro.
  7. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
