How to Make By Cracky Bars

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) softened shortening and 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in 2 large eggs one at a time, then stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with 1 cup milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter in half. Stir in 1 cup melted semi-sweet chocolate chips and ½ cup chopped walnuts into one half of the batter.
  7. Spread the chocolate batter evenly in the prepared 9x13 inch pan.
  8. Arrange a layer of graham crackers (about 12-15 full-size crackers, or adjust to fit pan) over the chocolate batter.
  9. Drop spoonfuls of the remaining batter (with no chocolate added) over the graham cracker layer. Spread to cover evenly.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached.
  11. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars.
