How to Make Gingered Lemonade
- Mash 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup peeled and thinly sliced fresh ginger, and 1 cup thinly sliced lemons in a large bowl using a potato masher or wooden spoon until the lemon slices release their juice, the sugar dissolves, and the mixture thickens into a syrup (about 4 minutes).
- Pour half of the lemon-ginger mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a separate bowl, pressing on the solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.
- Discard the solids.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the remaining lemon-ginger mixture.
- Transfer the strained liquid to a large pitcher.
- Add 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher and stir well to combine.
- Chill thoroughly in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Stir gently before serving over ice. Garnish with additional lemon slices and/or candied ginger (optional).
