How to Make Layered Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, oil, vanilla extract, and boiling water to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the chocolate pudding according to package directions.
  8. Once the cakes and pudding are completely cool, level the tops of the cakes if necessary. Place one cake layer on a serving plate.
  9. Spread half of the chocolate pudding over the first cake layer.
  10. Top with the second cake layer and spread the remaining pudding over the top.
  11. Frost the cake as desired and garnish with chocolate shavings or fresh berries.
