How to Make Sashas Marble Birthday Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Grease an 18cm deep round cake tin with a few drops of oil, using a pastry brush to coat evenly.
  3. Cut a circle of greaseproof paper to fit the bottom of the tin and press it in.
  4. Lightly brush the base with oil.
  5. Combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 cup (2 sticks) softened margarine, 1 tbsp milk, 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar, and 1 tsp vanilla extract in a food processor.
  6. Whisk 3 large eggs in a small bowl and add to the food processor.
  7. Process for 2 minutes, or until well combined.
  8. Divide the batter into three bowls.
  9. In the first bowl, add a few drops of pink food coloring and mix well.
  10. In the second bowl, add ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder and the remaining 2 tbsp milk. Mix well.
  11. Spoon alternating dollops of white, chocolate, and pink batter into the prepared cake tin.
  12. Use a round-bladed knife to swirl the batter gently, creating a marble effect.
  13. Level the top of the batter.
  14. Bake for approximately 60-75 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. The cake should be golden brown on top.
  15. Gently press the top of the cake; if it springs back, it's done.
  16. Run a knife around the edge of the cake and invert it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  17. Peel off the greaseproof paper.
  18. Once cooled, melt 6 oz of your favorite chocolate in a double boiler or microwave.
  19. Pour melted chocolate over the cake and spread evenly with a palette knife.
  20. Decorate with your favorite sweets and candles.
