How to Make Apple Charlottes
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Brush six 1-cup capacity ovenproof dishes with melted butter.
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1kg peeled, cored, and sliced apples, 100g brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 50ml water.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender (about 10-15 minutes).
- Drain the apples well and let them cool completely.
- Using a 7cm biscuit cutter, cut 12 rounds from 6 slices of bread. Use remaining bread for sides.
- Cut remaining bread slices into 2cm wide fingers.
- Trim bread fingers to fit the height of each ovenproof dish.
- Dip six bread rounds in melted butter and place in the base of each dish.
- Dip each bread finger in melted butter and press around the sides of each dish vertically, overlapping slightly.
- Fill each bread-lined dish with the cooked apples.
- Top with the remaining buttered bread rounds.
- Place the dishes on a baking tray.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown and heated through.
- Carefully turn the charlottes onto plates and serve warm.
- Serve with your favorite jam sauce (recipe below) and a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
- **Jam Sauce:** In a small saucepan, combine 200g jam, 50ml water and 1 tbsp lemon juice.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any seeds or lumps.
- Serve hot.
