Ingredients for Baked Fish Fillets With Star Fruit Carambola

  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 (4-6 oz) white fish fillets (cod, tilapia, or halibut)
  • White Pepper
  • 1 large star fruit (carambola), thinly sliced
  • 1-2 tablespoons lime juice (optional, to taste)

How to Make Baked Fish Fillets With Star Fruit Carambola

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Lightly grease a baking dish large enough to hold the fish fillets in a single layer.
  3. Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter evenly over the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. Place the fish fillets on top of the butter in the baking dish.
  5. Season the fish fillets generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  6. Arrange the thinly sliced star fruit carambola on top of the fish fillets.
  7. Dot the star fruit and fish with the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter.
  8. Taste a slice of star fruit to determine its sweetness level.
  9. If the star fruit is very sweet, sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of lime juice.
  10. If the star fruit is tart, add 1 tablespoon of lime juice, or less to taste.
  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the fish is opaque in the center and flakes easily with a fork. Do not overcook.
  12. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Want to unlock deeper, more complex flavors? Try toasting your whole spices before grinding them, or blooming ground spices in a little warm oil to enhance their aroma. Deglazing your pan with a bit of stock, wine, or even water after browning ingredients can capture those tasty caramelized bits, adding richness to your dish.
