Ingredients for Barmbrack

  • Mixed Dried Fruit
  • Black Tea
  • Egg
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • Orange Marmalade
  • Sugar
  • Self Raising Flour

How to Make Barmbrack

  1. Combine the dried fruit and the tea in a large bowl; cover and let it soak overnight (or at least 6 hours).
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, mixed spice, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  6. Gently fold in the soaked dried fruit along with the hidden charms (1 pea, 1 stick, 1 small piece of cloth, 1 coin, 1 ring).
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top is browning too quickly, loosely tent with foil.
  8. Let the Barmbrack cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cool, slice and enjoy with your friends and family!
  9. Serve warm with butter and tea, and share your fortunes!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Elevate your dish with simple flavor boosters! A final flourish of freshly chopped herbs can add incredible brightness, while a squeeze of lemon or lime juice right before serving can awaken all the flavors. Don't underestimate a sprinkle of quality finishing salt or a drizzle of good olive oil to make your creation shine.
