Ingredients for Arkansas Green Beans

  • 1 pound fresh green beans, OR 4 (12-ounce) bags frozen green beans, thawed and drained, OR 2 (15-ounce) cans of green beans, drained and rinsed
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

How to Make Arkansas Green Beans

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. If using fresh green beans, wash and trim 1 pound (about 3 cups) of green beans. If using frozen, thaw completely and drain well. If using canned, drain and rinse thoroughly.
  3. Place the drained/rinsed green beans in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  4. In a large skillet, cook 6 slices of bacon until crispy. Remove bacon from skillet and chop into large pieces. Set aside.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/4 cup melted butter, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder.
  6. Sprinkle the chopped bacon evenly over the green beans in the baking dish.
  7. Pour the brown sugar mixture evenly over the bacon and green beans.
  8. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes, or until green beans are tender and the topping is slightly caramelized.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!

Chef's Tip for Extra Flavor

Chef's secret: layers of flavor make a dish truly memorable! Consider what a little extra something could bring – perhaps a touch of acidity like a good vinegar or citrus zest, a hint of smokiness from paprika, a bit of umami from mushrooms or soy sauce, or a sprinkle of toasted nuts for texture. Experiment and taste as you go!
